Cold Weather Preparedness and Prevention Suggestions

The National Weather Service is monitoring some very cold artic air approaching from the north; possibly causing temperatures to drop into single digit nightime lows during the first part of next week. Temperatures could remain very low for at least two to three days, and is currently being billed as the coldest air in the area since January 2019. That being said, City of Charlestown officials would like to take the opportunity to offer some extreme cold weather planning and preventative measures; not only as a reminder, but also to help reduce any impacts from severe weather this time of the year. Here are a list of suggestions for extreme winter weather planning and hazard prevention: -Electricity, heating, communication, food/water and medications are essential; have a back up plan and act immediately if any of these become unreliable. -Check on elderly friends, family and neighbors (especially those living alone); while…


Have a Happy and Safe New Year

The women and men of the Charlestown Police Department wish everyone a very Happy New Year; with sincere hopes that everyone has a fun but safe New Years Eve this evening.  Those who are venturing away from their homes, please remember to have a designated plan for not driving while impaired on any substance.  CHPD, along with most first responders nationwide, wants to have a quiet and uneventful evening / night; and no one wants anyone hurt or worse.  It is truly no fun having to inform the loved ones of a family members tragic death; especially on a holiday and due to a senseless act such a intoxicated driving.  Happy New Year everyone!


CHPD Launches Mobile App

The Charlestown Police Department, in an effort to further increase connectivity with the residents of the City of Charlestown, recently launched a free mobile app for both iOS and Android smartphones.  CLICK HERE to find it now in your app store. Features of the new CHPD Mobile app include: The ability to receive push notifications of important local information directly on your smartphone; Simple and easy to use contact links for reporting crime and contacting CHPD officers (in Charlestown, Indiana). Directions and information on Department services such as obtaining report copies, vehicle inspections, handgun permits, background checks, vacation checks, property release, etc. Resources for local interests including crime prevention tips, Neighborhood Watch updates, Crime Mapping, and much more. New Radar/Message Speed Limit Sign Project

During their August 2020 meeting, the Charlestown City Council approved a plan to use existing funds to purchase four portable and solar powered radar speed limit signs, equipped with multi-colored LED messaging.  The new radar message signs will be assigned and periodically moved about each of the four council districts within Charlestown; and mounted on designated city street locations, based on citizen speeding complaints and areas where a local vehicular traffic study is needed.  These new signs will be easy for the city street department to relocate, so that they are able to be deployed for weeks at a time;   then relocated where most needed.  “The City Council is excited to work on this project with our Police Department.  The signs will   help in neighborhoods where our residents have concerns of speeding. 2020 Sgt. Bertram 5K-9 Plans Finalized for Virtual Event

We’re pleased to announce information for this year’s Sgt. Bertram 5K-9. We’ve had to make some unfortunate changes to the race protocol this year, due to the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic. The 2020 Sgt. Bertram 5K-9 will be a virtual race. Race Registration is currently open and will remain open until October 10th at 4:00 PM. Registering for the race is simple, you can do so by following the link below for electronic registration or you can stop by the Police Department and pick up a paper registration form. Race registration is $30.00. Pre-Registration is open until Sunday September 20th at 5:00 PM. All Pre-Registrations for the 2020 Sgt. Bertram 5K-9 will include a free Sgt. Bertram 5K-9 T-shirt.
