The first day of school is fast approaching and the Charlestown Police Department (CHPD) wants to ensure that motorists have an effective-yet safe commute-both in and out of our school campuses. One of the challenges we anticipate this year is the construction project that is currently taking place on Market Street in between Park Street and C.R. 403. The construction is expected to last several more months; which will make travel through the area a challenge, especially at peak school travel times.
CHPD has met with school & school transportation administrators in order to develop a travel plan for buses coming to and from the affected area schools; involving more use of Monroe Street from both the north and south sides of town. Thus, we expect heavy traffic on Monroe Street in the area of Park Street; however we also strongly suggest parents and commuting students use Monroe Street; as well as the following side streets, via the following travel routes:
Commuting from North of Park Street:
• Monroe St. (accessible to all three schools from Market St. or Hwy 3 in the north) or
• Basham Drive / Pirate Place from Market Street, to access CHS student parking near the baseball & softball fields.
Commuting from South of Park Street:
• Monroe St. (accessible to all three schools from S.R. 62 in the south)
• Level St. (accessible to all three schools, runs parallel with Monroe St. and is accessible from S.R. 62 to Park St. near CHS)
CHPD officers will be in and out of various areas monitoring school travel routes; and will be increasing moving violation enforcement; such as speeding, stop sign, & bus stop arm violations to increase travel safety. Given the above circumstances; please allow extra travel time, especially during your morning commute.
