The Charlestown Police Department traditionally trains on average more than ten times that which is annually mandated by the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board.
Several Department officers are state certified instructors and specialized in most of the below training categories; this enables the department to train over and above state minimum requirements. Department instructors also instruct at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, located in Plainfield, Indiana, part time when department scheduling permits.

Each full time officer, in the State of Indiana, must complete the 15 week Basic Academy Course within the first twelve months of employment with any law enforcement agency. Reserve Officers must also complete the State Training Board's Pre-Basic 40 hour Course prior to being sworn and authorized the power of arrest within the State of Indiana.
