Crime Reporting

The philosophy of the Charlestown Police Department relies in part on the community reporting any and all crime and suspicious activity; whether they are the direct victim or not.  Solving crime demands the completion of multiple processes, normally beginning with the reporting of crime / criminal acts.

The following information is dedicated to explaining options for Filing a Police Report; as well as, Reporting Crime and Suspicious Activity.

DIAL 911 for REPORTING EMERGENCIES

IT’S AN EMERGENCY IF someone is hurt, could be hurt, or in your opinion there is an immediate need for POLICE, FIRE or EMS.  DIAL 911 from any phone, including cell phones; and in Clark County Indiana, you can also send a TEXT MESSAGE TO 911.  For more information about calling 911 CLICK HERE.  When dialing 911 in Charlestown, you will reach a dispatcher of Clark County Emergency Communications; which provides county-wide dispatching services for all Clark County Indiana Police, Fire and EMS agencies under state mandate.

NON-EMERGENCY REPORTING OPTIONS

The following THREE options are available for Charlestown residents and visitors to make contact with a Charlestown Police Officer, in a non-emergency situation…..like when a crime in NOT IN PROGRESS.

CALL DISPATCH

CALL DISPATCH AT 812-256-6345 and select option #6 or call 812-246-6996.

Dispatch will make contact with an available on-duty Charlestown Police Officer; and either SEND them to your address, or CALL you back at a phone number you prefer.  The choice is yours.

ON-LINE REPORTING

Use the following ON-LINE REPORTING form to electronically begin a NON-EMERGENCY report of an incident / crime.  A Charlestown Police Officer will review the on-line submission provided, and contact you (if necessary) for purposes of completing the report process (again, on a non-emergency basis).  A POLICE OFFICER WILL NOT BE IMMEDIATELY DISPATCHED TO YOU USING THIS OPTION.

Please do not use the On-Line Reporting form to report anonymous crime tips, as name and phone contact information is required for submission and use.

TIP LINE CALL / EMAIL

TipLineGraphic2016websitetagThe Charlestown Police Department places a significant value on any and all information provided to investigators; and furthermore encourages the community to join the department’s crime fighting endeavors by reporting crime and suspicious activity.  The department recognizes that providing crime and suspicious activity information is sometimes best done an anonymous basis.

CALL THE CHARLESTOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT ANONYMOUS CRIME TIP LINE AT 812-256-CHPD (2473) ANY TIME OF THE DAY OR NIGHT.

When calling the CHPD Tip Line, you will NOT speak to a dispatcher or officer directly; rather be provided the opportunity to leave your information on an answering machine.  The CHPD Tip Line messages are checked directly by CHPD Detectives on a daily basis.

The CHPD Tip Line is NOT designed to file a police report, if you are a crime victim; and is designated for receiving tips directly involving activity within the city limits of Charlestown, Indiana.
