SEPTEMBER 13, 2001                                             FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Charlestown Police Department received a telephone report of an armed robbery at the First Saving Bank, on Market Street in Charlestown, at approximately 11:41 a.m., on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001. The report was received by a teller who fled the bank to an adjacent business after being confronted by the assailant who pointed a handgun at her and another teller. According to bank tellers and several other nearby witnesses, a white male, in his mid to late twenties, with dark hair, beard and mustache, wearing blue jeans, a tan button down shirt, wire rim eyeglasses and a tan fishing type hat, entered the bank front door just before 11:40 am. After entering the bank, the man walked back to the front door and looked outside before walking to the teller counter, pointing a semi-automatic handgun at the tellers and ordering them to the floor. The assailant then retrieved an undetermined amount of cash and exited the bank via its rear door. Witnesses say the assailant, carrying a green nap sack type bag, got into a red full size Dodge pick-up truck, parked in the south parking lot, and left driving north on Market Street (Hwy. #3) prior to police arrival at approximately 11:43 am. No injuries resulted from the incident and the red Dodge pick-up truck, was recovered by officers a short time later, behind the Charlestown Plaza Shopping Center approximately a block and a half north of the bank. Police believe the assailant changed vehicles behind or near the Charlestown Shopping Plaza, and fled the Charlestown area. Anyone witnessing any of these events or having information that might be related to this incident is asked to contact the Charlestown Police Department, Indiana State Police or Federal Bureau of Investigation office in New Albany.
