MAY 10, 2001 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Charlestown Police Department received a complaint of a Burglary in progress, Wednesday, May 9^th, at approximately 3:32 p.m.. Chief Wayne Crumpton, Officer Don Wolfe and Indiana State Trooper Mike Bennett arrived within two minutes to find an adult male and a juvenile male at the rear of a residence located in the 100 block of Spring Street, in Charlestown. The adult male, identified as 22 year old John Robertson of Charlestown, was inside the residence upon officer’s arrival while the juvenile male, a 15 year old of Charlestown, was standing outside of the residence, in front of broken out residence window. Both suspects claimed to be living at the residence in question, and that they had forgotten their key. After some brief investigating, officers concluded that the suspects were lying and placed them under arrest. John Robertson was charged with Class B Felony Burglary; as well as, Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, and transported to the Clark County Jail. The juvenile was arrested for Burglary and transported to the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center. The original complaint to police was received by a neighbor, who’s quick thinking and action of calling 911 made it possible for officers to arrive while the crime was in progress, and make immediate arrests. Officers have now learned that a third male, 22 year old Samuel "Sammy" Carpenter, Jr. of Charlestown, was also involved in the burglary. Carpenter is now wanted for questioning by the Charlestown Police Department and may be facing similar Burglary charges. Charlestown Police would like to remind citizens to record make, model and serial number information of all valuable property, and keep it in a safe place.
